Chronic insomnia effects more than 10% of Americans. How can The Mayo Clinic help?
How does insomnia treatment work at The Mayo Clinic?
Problem:
There is not enough time in one session to teach patients how to handle their symptoms.
Research
We started by meeting with members of the Sleep Center, including the RN’s who teach the sleep insomnia classes. We then grouped the material and kept an ongoing dialogue with the Sleep Center on what material was important. We also shadowed sleep classes to better understand the patient and help facilitate the creation of the book.
The solution: a piece of interactive class material that also serves as an at home insomnia workbook.
The existing material was restructured so it aligned better with the sleep class. Patients can have all the tools that were taught in class to look back on when they are suffering with insomnia at home.

+ Patients could see which color archetype they fit into when it comes to their sleep patterns.

+ Meditation and guided imagery were among some of the relaxation techniques provided.

+ Worry time is built into the patient’s schedule, something that was previously overlooked.

Patient Journey
Reexamining the patient journey helped establish key areas to be included in the app interface.
Wireframing
This process helped planned the content for the interface and an initial aesthetic direction emerged
Aesthetic Direction
After wireframing, an aesthetic direction was chosen that would match the existing branding of the sleep workbook.
